Background of the Study

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are critical to the economic development of many localities, including Lafia LGA. Budgetary control, which involves setting financial targets and monitoring actual performance, is a vital tool for managing business finances. This study seeks to explore the impact of budgetary control on the financial performance of SMEs in Lafia LGA, as effective budgetary control can help SMEs optimize resources, reduce wastage, and improve profitability.

Statement of the Problem

Many SMEs in Lafia LGA face financial challenges due to ineffective budgeting, poor resource allocation, and insufficient financial control. As a result, they struggle to maintain profitability and sustain growth. This study aims to assess the role of budgetary control in improving the financial performance of SMEs in Lafia LGA.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

Aim: To examine the impact of budgetary control on the financial performance of SMEs in Lafia LGA.
Objectives:

  1. To assess the extent of budgetary control practices adopted by SMEs in Lafia LGA.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between budgetary control and the profitability of SMEs.
  3. To identify challenges SMEs face in implementing effective budgetary control.

Research Questions

  1. What budgetary control practices are used by SMEs in Lafia LGA?
  2. How does budgetary control affect the financial performance and profitability of SMEs?
  3. What challenges do SMEs face in adopting budgetary control mechanisms?

Research Hypothesis

  1. H₀: Budgetary control does not significantly impact the financial performance of SMEs in Lafia LGA.
  2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between budgetary control and profitability in SMEs in Lafia LGA.
  3. H₀: Challenges in implementing budgetary control do not significantly affect the financial performance of SMEs in Lafia LGA.

Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into how SMEs can improve their financial performance through effective budgetary control. The findings may contribute to better financial practices within SMEs in Lafia LGA and can be used as a reference for future financial management strategies.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will focus on SMEs in Lafia LGA, with limitations including the potential for biased responses from business owners and difficulties in accessing accurate financial data.
